Presentation

Being partially sighted or blind, either from birth, due to an accident or as the result of an illness, has an impact on the way you perform your daily activities, from routine tasks to the things you do at work or when socialising. Studying, working, getting from A to B, having fun… all these things require considerable efforts that must be repeated again and again, requiring extraordinary energy and concentration. Whilst acute visual limitations affect children as much as adults, visual impairment now affects a growing number of elderly people, whose life expectancy has increased over recent years.

With a wealth of experience behind it and a desire to offer services and infrastructures of the highest quality, the Friends of the Blind and Visually Impaired Federal Charity has developed an integrated offering of therapeutic and support services that is unique in Belgium. Any child or adult affected by acute visual limitation or blindness will find a solution to their particular needs.

This integrated service offering takes the form of a complementary approach across the departments: social services, special support service, the rehabilitation centre, the guide dog training centres (Mons, Koksijde), the sheltered workshops and the adapted transcription centre. This offering is complemented by a residential service for adults.

The Friends of the Blind and Visually Impaired also improves quality of life for the visually impaired through numerous cultural, sports and leisure activities. It is well renowned for its adaptation of films in French and Dutch, as well as for providing access to culture.

The Friends of the Blind and Visually Impaired guide dog training centre was set up in 1946 by two blind instructors trained in Switzerland. More recently, the association opened a centre for guide dogs in Koksijde. From the outset, the guide dog training service has been placed under the responsibility of a blind instructor in order to ensure that the guide dogs for blind and partially sighted people receive the best possible training.
